How to Achieve Band 7.5 in IELTS Speaking in 3 Months

How to Achieve Band 7.5 in IELTS Speaking in 3 Months

Do you dream of studying abroad? Is achieving Band 7.5 or higher in IELTS Speaking your goal?

Knowing English alone is not enough. You need to develop the ability to speak naturally, express your opinions clearly and organise your answers quickly.

Many students worry too much about grammar and vocabulary during the Speaking test. However, achieving a high band score requires a balanced combination of fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammatical accuracy and coherent ideas.

IUAS Education is sharing a simple three-month IELTS Speaking preparation plan. Following it consistently can help you improve your confidence and speaking ability.

🗓️Month 1: Build a Strong Foundation in English Speaking

🎯 Main Goal: Fluency and Confidence

During the first month, your priority should be overcoming your fear of speaking English.

Record yourself speaking for at least 20–30 minutes every day. Talk about simple topics such as what you are doing, where you have been, what you enjoy and what you would like to do in the future.

You can begin with topics such as:

  • Your family and home
  • Your studies
  • Your career or future plans
  • Your hobbies
  • Food
  • Travel
  • Friends
  • Your city

Instead of memorizing the same answers repeatedly, try to develop responses based on your own experiences.

🎧 Listening and Imitation

Listen carefully to how proficient English speakers communicate. Choose short clips from IELTS Speaking samples, BBC Learning English or other reliable English-learning resources.

Try to imitate the speaker’s pronunciation, rhythm and intonation. This technique is commonly known as imitation or shadowing practice.

📚 Strengthen Your Grammar Foundation

During the first month, focus on improving the following areas:

  • Tenses
  • Articles
  • Subject–verb agreement
  • Sentence structure
  • Prepositions

Do not pause too often while trying to make every sentence perfect. Your first goal should be to communicate clearly and naturally.

🗓️Month 2: Improve Your Vocabulary and Ideas

🎯 Main Goal: Fluency and Confidence

During the first month, your priority should be overcoming your fear of speaking English.

Record yourself speaking for at least 20–30 minutes every day. Talk about simple topics such as what you are doing, where you have been, what you enjoy and what you would like to do in the future.

You can begin with topics such as:

  • Your family and home
  • Your studies
  • Your career or future plans
  • Your hobbies
  • Food
  • Travel
  • Friends
  • Your city

Instead of memorising the same answers repeatedly, try to develop responses based on your own experiences.

🗓️ Month 2 : Improve Your Vocabulary and Ideas

🎯 Main Goal: Better Vocabulary and Better Ideas

During the second month, focus on making your answers more detailed, organised and natural.

You can learn 10–15 topic-related words or useful expressions every day. However, do not simply memorise individual words. Create your own sentence using each new word or expression.

For example, instead of using only the word “beautiful,” you could learn:

  • Attractive
  • Fascinating
  • Impressive
  • Breathtaking
  • Memorable

Then try to use these words naturally in conversations.

🗣️ Practise Speaking Parts 2 and 3

Practise at least one Cue Card every day.

You can use this simple structure to organise your answer:

Main Idea → Reason → Example → Personal Opinion

For example, if you are asked to describe a place, do not mention only its name. Explain:

  • Why you like the place
  • When you visited it
  • What you experienced there
  • Why you would recommend it to others

This will help you make your answers more detailed and coherent.

👥 Find a Speaking Partner

If possible, practise regularly with a friend or speaking partner.

One person can act as the examiner and ask questions while the other answers. Afterwards, discuss the following areas:

  • Pronunciation
  • Grammar
  • Vocabulary
  • Fluency
  • Organisation of ideas

This will help both participants identify their weaknesses and improve more effectively.

🗓️Month 3: Take Mock Tests and Make Final Improvements

🎯 Main Goal: Natural Delivery and Exam Performance

During the final month, your practice sessions should closely resemble the actual IELTS Speaking test.

Try to complete at least three full Speaking mock tests every week.

Each mock test should include:

Part 1 → Part 2 → Part 3

Practise all three parts in the correct sequence and follow the official time limits as closely as possible.

🎙️ Listen to Your Recordings

Listening to your own recordings is one of the most effective ways to improve your IELTS Speaking performance.

While reviewing a recording, ask yourself:

  • Where am I pausing too often?
  • Am I repeating the same words?
  • Is my pronunciation clear?
  • Am I making the same grammatical mistakes repeatedly?
  • Are my answers too short?
  • Am I using unnecessary fillers?
  • Are my ideas properly connected?

After every mock test, write down two or three major mistakes. During your next practice session, focus specifically on correcting them.

🗣️ Use Natural English Instead of Memorised Answers

Learning from sample answers can be helpful, but you should not memorise complete answers and repeat them during the examination.

If the examiner changes the question slightly, a memorised response may no longer be relevant.

Instead, learn useful ideas, vocabulary and answer structures. Then respond to each question naturally in your own words.

Avoid overusing fillers such as:

  • Umm
  • You know
  • Like

You can use natural expressions such as:

  • Actually…
  • To be honest…
  • Well, I think…
  • In my opinion…
  • From my experience…

However, these expressions should also be used naturally and in moderation

🚀 Five Bonus Strategies for Faster Improvement

1. Develop the Habit of Thinking in English

Try to reduce the habit of creating every sentence in Bengali before translating it into English.

Begin by thinking about simple, everyday matters directly in English. This can help you respond more quickly and naturally during the test.

2. Create Topic Mind Maps

Create small mind maps for common IELTS Speaking topics, such as:

  • Family
  • Education
  • Technology
  • Environment
  • Travel
  • Food
  • Work
  • Health

For each topic, write down relevant vocabulary, useful ideas and personal examples. These notes will help you develop answers more quickly.

3. Practise Shadowing

Listen to a fluent English speaker and immediately repeat what they say while following the same rhythm, stress and pronunciation.

Even 10–15 minutes of daily shadowing practice can help improve your pronunciation and speaking delivery.

4. Listen to English Every Day

Regularly listen to BBC Learning English, IELTS learning channels, podcasts and educational videos.

Do not listen passively. Pay attention to how speakers use vocabulary, expressions, pronunciation and sentence structures in context.

5. Check Your Progress Weekly

Save at least one Speaking recording every week.

After one month, compare your first recording with your most recent one. This will help you recognise your improvement and identify areas that still require attention.
